The Sankofa Center

Ghana & California

Since 2004, The Sankofa Center , a 501(c)(3) U.S. operated charity has educated village youths and adults about how HIV/AIDS is transmitted and prevented, while changing perceptions using culturally comprehensive methods- African dance-dramas- in Ghana, West Africa. They also conduct free counseling & testing and provide links to treatment for thousands of women, men, and children in Ghana.

Sankofa Center maintains a credit based internship program in which international students from universities and colleges in the U.S., Canada, United Kingdom, Europe, Asia, and other parts of the world conduct field placements during the outreach tours. Non-student volunteers are also accepted on the volunteer program throughout the year.

Sankofa Center's volunteer/internship program covers three main functions. Artistic volunteers are incorporated into the touring performance as dancers, actors, musicians, and artists. Medical interns are trained to conduct rapid HIV/AIDS testing during our village outreach. Lastly, Public Health/Social work interns are trained to conduct classroom & village educational seminars on HIV/AIDS as well as prep for pre/post counseling during the testing process. They are also the liasons between patients and our network of medical hospitals, ensuring a smooth transition into proper care. Volunteer/Interns can choose to participate in one specific program focus or opt to be incorporated into multiple functions during their tenure.

Sankofa Center has an ongoing Ambassador program for volunteers/interns who would rather volunteer locally within their community or online via facebook, blogs, etc. Our Ambassadors work in their community, or partnering school groups and clubs, to educate people about Sankofa Center's arts-based HIV/AIDS methods, HIV/AIDS facts, and to fundraise for Sankofa Center and/or their own groups by promoting the organization's "Products for A Purpose". Ambassadors can volunteer or be paid representatives of Sankofa Center in their community!

"Products for A Purpose" are fairtrade , handmade fashion, home, and style products designed in Ghana by Sankofa Center's director, Ronnie Shaw. All items are made by the organization's growing HIV/AIDS cooperative in Ghana with all proceeds benefiting the continued HIV/AIDS education, prevention, testing, link to treatment, and HIV drug regime for Sankofa's clients.
