Kabataang Gabay sa Positibong Pamumuhay
Kabataang Gabay sa Positibong Pamumuhay or in English come close to "Peers for Positive Living" was founded in the year 1999 by 18 Pag-asa Youth Association of the Philippines under the Department of Social Welfare and Development in Iloilo City Philippines. Working with communities of at-risk and vulnerable children and youth in highly exploitative environments and risk spaces, KGPP operates in 6 provinces and 10 highly urbanised cities/municipalities in Western Visayas and had reached 8,000 at-risk children and youth since 1999.
Our mission and vision are:
"We shape wings that make youth fly and paint their dreams across the sky, Propelled by winds and soar them high and be the change as days pass by"
Our organization brings our facilitators mostly young people who have rose above their individual adversities to poverty-stricken communities where they set their life stories as examples of hope. These communities where their survival needs compels their youth to go to the streets and exploitative environments for a living most often times fall victims to exploitation and as it becomes their daily living, they see it as an economic opportunity rather than an abusive experience. They end being exposed to health and psychosocial ills that are intervened with punitive rather than transformative interventions that further them into clandestine occupations. Their bid and ability to transform for better are lost.
We feel a deep responsibility to rebuild their shattered dreams and capacities they once have.
We aim Life Competence for them and we facilitate human capacities for response through youth-led development principles. We develop platforms for community dialogue that deeply engage young people in decision-making processes in their community, offering them life tools that facilitate in making informed decisions and in shaping their own solutions to issues confronting them.
We are better known for the arts, crafts and campaign materials we develop out of the change efforts and art therapy outputs our communities create that we sell and most are offered as gifts to our sponsors that keeps our connections. Visual arts, performing arts, music and video productions are one of our activities that animate the lives of our beneficiaries as well as those who help us sustain our efforts.
Our youth-led programmes are:
(1) Youth Employability and Social Entrepreneurship,
(2) Youth Leadership and Engagement,
(3) Advocacy and Social Mobilisation,
(4) Peer Learning Facilitation and Self-measurement of change (for Behavior Change),
(5) Life Skills Education and Literacy,
(6) Inner Healing and Trans-personal Art Therapy
With our simple efforts to create change, we have been recognized as one of the most outstanding youth organizations in the Philippines in 2003 for Iloilo City Chapter working with prostituted boys and 2008 for the Negros Chapter working for people living with HIV.
